TNG / THE FOUR I’S

ICONIC

To be iconic is not to repeat what has been done. It is to become unavoidable in your own right.

ICONIC IS OVERUSED BECAUSE IT IS MISUNDERSTOOD.

People say iconic when they mean famous, when they mean striking, when they mean unusual. None of those are iconic. Famous is a relationship to audience. Striking is a relationship to contrast. Unusual is a relationship to expectation. Iconic is something else entirely — it is the quality of being so fully oneself that the self becomes a reference point. The man who is iconic is not trying to be iconic. That is the point. He is trying to be himself, very precisely, without compromise, over time. The iconic quality accumulates as a consequence. What TNG offers the man on this path is not a formula. You cannot dress yourself iconic. What you can do is dress in a way that is consistent with the interior work — that reflects a sensibility that has been developed, tested, and maintained without apology. The garment that deserves to be called iconic is the garment that could not have been chosen by anyone else. Not because it is unusual. Because it is completely yours.
